Why it matters

Your average price depends on how many shares you bought at each price.

10,000 shares at 20p plus 5,000 at 24p cost £3,200 before fees. Adding £5 in costs to each purchase gives £3,210 across 15,000 shares: an average cost of 21.4p.

How it's calculated
Average cost (p) = [Σ(shares × price in p ÷ 100) + Σ(costs in £)] ÷ total shares × 100

The average includes all purchase costs you enter. The before-cost average is shown separately. Include any applicable duty in your costs; it isn’t added automatically.

Assumptions & limitations

Purchases only. Excludes sales, dividends, rights adjustments, splits, consolidations and other corporate actions. This is not an official tax cost-basis or realised-profit calculation. A lower average cost is not, by itself, a reason to buy more.
